In the past two and a half years since the nationwide protests in Iran, there has been no meaningful accountability for victims of gross human rights violations and crimes under international law. Victims and their families, seeking justice, have instead faced intimidation, threats, harassment, detention, and criminal prosecution. With no realistic prospects for accountability within Iran, the international community is urged to act including by establishing universal jurisdiction, creating a Victims’ Fund, and supporting truth-seeking and justice initiatives. On 3 April 2024, the UN Human Rights Council voted to extend the Fact-Finding Mission’s mandate for one additional year until March 2026, and with an expanded mandate, to allow for investigations into allegations of recent and ongoing serious human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
