Protesters around the country have asked local officials to do more when it comes to opposing immigration operations in their cities and states, but the Constitution's supremacy clause generally limits how much action can be taken.
ICE activity has reportedly ramped up in Columbus, Ohio, with “Operation Buckeye.” City officials, including the mayor, are trying to push back.
“I’ve been clear that city of Columbus resources will not be used to help federal deportation efforts, or investigations based solely on immigration status," Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther, a Democrat, said last week as the ICE operations were ramping up.
Trump administration officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, have condemned Ginther’s response. Miller wrote on X, “Why is the mayor of Columbus, Ohio, advocating for mass Somali migration?”
Protesters opposed to ICE activity in the city, and others around the country, have called on their elected officials to do more to stand up to the immigration raids. The reality is there’s only so much officials at the city and state level can do.
“They cannot completely stop ICE, through their own actions, but they can impose some constraints," said Ilya Somin, a George Mason University law professor and Cato Institute policy scholar.
