He was Japan's most celebrated wildlife photographer.
He spent twenty years living in Alaska.
His name became synonymous with that distant northern wilderness.
His name was Michio Hoshino.

At nineteen, he stumbled upon a photography book about Alaska in a secondhand bookstore.
A single aerial photograph captured his heart and never let go.
He boldly wrote a letter to the village elder of an Alaskan Inuit community, not even knowing the recipient's name.
Six months later, the elder wrote back with a warm invitation.
From that moment, his fate was bound forever to the Far North.

He crossed mountain ranges, walked across glaciers, and camped alone on the tundra for weeks at a time.
He documented the lives of brown bears, polar bears, caribou, the Northern Lights, and the indigenous peoples of Alaska.
His work appeared in National Geographic magazine.
His photo essays became beloved reading across Japan.
Every summer he brought Japanese schoolchildren to Alaska to experience nature firsthand.

On August 8, 1996, forty-three-year-old Michio Hoshino was killed by a brown bear while on a film assignment in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia.
His memorial exhibition drew over one million visitors who came to pay their respects.
His photographic works are permanently held by Alaskan government institutions and museums.
