(28 Jan 2017) Iraqi lawmakers on Saturday reacted to US President Donald Trump's executive order suspending visa applications from Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries for 90 days.
Kurdish lawmaker Ashwaq al Jaf said that the issue affected people's human rights and expressed hope that the United States will not continue to "violate the right of Iraqi citizens to obtain a visa".
Sunni Iraqi parliamentarian Dhia al Duri shared the view that the new state of Iraqi-US relations will not last, particularly given Iraq's oil wealth and other shared interests, which he said "America will not dispense off".
Trump signed the order on Friday banning immigration from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen to the United States for three months.
