Today I visit my first Maya site in Belize: Xunantunich. This site is dominated by the Castillo, a massive stone structure that overlooks the valley of the Mopan River. It's about 11 km from San Ignacio, so pretty close for a day trip. Xunantunich was short-lived for a Maya city, rising to prominence in the 8th century then declining by 1100 AD.
