Speaking at the launch of a new inter-religious centre in Austria, United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon said that recognition of Israel's right to exist is the path to peace in the Middle East.
The Secretary-General's comments came during the inauguration of the International Centre for Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue, a Saudi-sponsored centre in Vienna meant to promote dialogue between the world's major religions.
The Chief Rabbi of Moscow Pinchas Goldschmidt backed the centre saying the attacks of September 11, 2001 "showed the world that religious leaders and religious ideas have enough power and passion to build or destroy the world "while critics accused the centre of being a ploy by Saudi Arabia's rulers to deflect from their own Human Rights record. The centre's board consists of three Christians, three Muslims, a Jew, a Buddhist and a Hindu.
