Oakstone Winery is one of the premium wineries of the Sierra Foothills, located in the heart of the Fair Play American Viticultural Area, where rolling hillsides emphasize the warm days and cool nights that produce grapes and wines of unusual intensity. The 2500-foot elevation of Fair Play combines with deep, rich decomposed granite soils to add strength and complexity to the wines. Featured wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Meritage, all from the estate "De Cascabel" vineyard. Additional estate wines include Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, estate Zinfandels, Petite Sirah and a selection of varietal Ports.

Obscurity Cellars was founded in 2001 to showcase the ability of obscure, lesser known varietals to shine as stand-alone wines when crafted with creativity and patience. Our estate vineyards are home to obscure varietals originating in France and Spain: Malbec, Alicante Bouschet, Tempranillo, Charbono and Petit Verdot to name a few.

Bud Break- That’s when the first cluster breaks on the vine. You can see this is all the Alicante Bouchet down here, its just been pruned so you’re not going to see bud break on that.

Typically the Alicante Bouschet is one of the first ones to break, and then the Pinot Grigio thats out by Slug Gulch Road is another one that we typically get early bud break on.

...It’s just the sprout, the tiny nub that starts is the bud. And when it first breaks onto the vine is Bud Break.

They’ll start to form and all of the sudden you’ll see these tiny BB’s. We’ll get bud break typically end of March, first part of April and then start picking depending on the brix, the sugar level. Earliest is first part of September. We’ve gotten some reds in as early as the last of August. The whites usually come in end of August, first part of September. The rest of it usually finishes by mid October at the latest.

Every season, every year is different. ...Its farming. And when its not ripe, you wait. :)
