Prologue to Modern Art - The Assault on the Salon 1840-1880

We’re kicking things off with a chapter we call The Assault on the Salon. Back in the mid-19th century, the French Academy had a total stranglehold on prestige, using beautiful art to whitewash reality and keep the elite happy while making the struggles of the poor invisible. But the insurrection was coming. Led by gate-crashers like Courbet the Barbarian and Manet, the Rogue of this party, a new vanguard launched a one-two! sucker-punch at the establishment. They stopped painting idealized myths and started painting mirrors, reflecting an unpleasant reality the Kingmakers desperately tried to gaslight. This was the moment the old guard's grip began to slip.

The Salon rejected this because Monet dared to paint a winter landscape with blue shadows instead of the "correct" black ones. It’s one of the first times an artist really looked at how light bounces off snow, using "negative" space to create a blindingly bright composition.
