Sinkholes and mudslides | Is San Diego at a saturation point with all the rain?

With more rain on the way, can we expect more sinkholes and mudslides around the county? CBS 8 talked with an expert about how ground saturation is playing a factor.

“Well, you know the rain we’ve been getting month after month, that’s really big for saturation. It’s very much a cumulative effect,” said Dr. Pat Abbott, professor emeritus of geology at San Diego State University. “It’s not like we had a solid two months of sunshine to pull all that water out of the earth and evaporate it. It just keeps being recharged, recharged, recharged, and the deeper that saturation, the longer it’s going to take to get it out.”

During recent storms, sinkholes have formed across the county, including a massive one in Cardiff that has been increasing in size with each passing rainstorm. Another sinkhole opened up in Scripps Ranch at Jerabek Park last week. Both were caused by ruptured storm water pipes that eroded the soil underneath.
