The Elektron Octatrack is an amazing piece of kit. I want it to be the center piece of my setup, yet it is the least understood instrument I own. I believe one has to invest time to practice to develop the muscle memory to get it to do the cool things it is capable of doing.

This video is a cheat sheet of instructions that remind me how to set the Octatrack up to do live audio sampling. There are various videos out there that explain it in varying ways and in a manner better than me. Would recommend videos by EZBOT as the obvious starting place.

With that said, this video is my cheat sheet to remind me how to set up for live sampling and the method on how to manually live sample.

Once you get the hang of this basic skill. You can then assign the recorded buffer to slots, or save them, and recall them as and when needed.

1. Assign a THRU machine to a T5
1. In SRC Menu set INAB = A+B.
2. Assign a FLEX machine to a track (7)
1. Double click T7 and ensure the Recording Buffer is set to R7.
2. To ensure audio plays back on T7 put a playback trig on step - VERY IMPORTANT.
3. Ensure Pattern Length is set to 16 on T7
3. Set Recording Settings for manual quantised sampling
1. Choose Recording Setup [FUNC] + [REC1].
2. Disable INAB and INCD. Set RLEN = 16, set SRC T5, Loop OFF.
3. Choose Recording Setup [ FUNC] + [REC2].
4. Set QREC = 16 - VERY IMPORTANT.
4. Press Play and listen to audio from THUR machine on T5.
5. Press AED to bring up the Audio Editor so we can see what we are sampling.
6. Press REC3 anytime to record a new quantised loop.
7. Review settings of SCENE A and B so you can use the fader to switch from Live Audio on T5 versus the sampled loop playing back on T7.
1. Note. Scene A is set to slot #1. Scene B is set to slot #9.
