Replacing broken window rotating coil balance extra long version

Описание к видео Replacing broken window rotating coil balance extra long version

Disclaimer:
The coil spring can be dangerous when under tension. Use extra care and wear suitable protective gear and eyewear. I’m not responsible for any harm you may incur. This video is not a tutorial and is presented as entertainment only.

This is an extra long video.
When your double hung window doesn’t stay open, the balance mechanism has to be adjusted or replaced. My double hung window has the Caldwell rotating tilt coil balance.
Finding the exact part or parts can be hard unless you already removed the old part and knows the part number.
If the spring is broken, you can just replace the spring and not the whole cartridge.

DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE I DID IN THE VIDEO:
Depending on your window, you might have to make a cut out to remove the old cartridge and install the new one. You don't have to cut a big hole like I did in the video. Just cut the back of the channel wide enough to pop the cartridge out. By not cutting the front part of the channel, you maintain the integrity of the channel and the retractable catch won't come out of the the channel when you raise or lower the sash.

You have to buy the right strength coil. If you are buying the cartridge, you can use the color of the cam as a guide. Mine is blue so that’s a start. Others can be blue or black. If the cartridge is of the same width and thickness, it’ll fit the channel. You also have to buy the cartridge with the right style cam.
For my window, the pivot on the left side has to be turned counterclockwise and the pivot can on the right window side has to be turned clockwise to receive the foot of the window sash. My window is probably the Andersen silver line double hung type.
It’s not rocket science and it can be done.
