The south island of New Zealand contains no active volcanoes, and very few complexes which have been active in the last 25 million years. Yet, to the east of Christchurch is a large mountain range which seemingly jets out over the surrounding landscape. Known as the Banks Peninsula, this large area is associated with an unusual geologic setting.
