CCC1087 Thus the risen Christ, by giving the Holy Spirit to the apostles, entrusted to them his power of sanctifying: they became sacramental signs of Christ. By the power of the same Holy Spirit they entrusted this power to their successors. This "apostolic succession" structures the whole liturgical life of the Church and is itself sacramental, handed on by the sacrament of Holy Orders.

So today we hear about our 194th Pope in Apostolic succession, Pope Benedict XI was an Italian man who reigned as pope from 1303 to 1305. A Dominican friar who later became pope.

Let’s look into few facts

● Pope Benedict XI was born in 1240, and received the name Nicholas Boccasina upon his birth.
● He entered the Dominican Order at the age of fourteen. After fourteen years of study, he became lector of theology, which office he filled for several years. In 1296 he was elected Master General of the Order.
● He was made cardinal in 1298, He later became bishop of Ostia and as papal legate to Hungary. When Pope Boniface died,Boccasini was unanimously elected Pope on October 22, 1303 taking the name of Benedict XI.

Papacy

● The first action he took as pope was to welcome the King back to the Church and end the excommunication done by the last pope.
● As pope, Benedict XI helped King Philip reach a compromise with King Edward I of England. He wrote a volume of sermons and commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, the psalms, and the Apocalypse.
● His papacy ended when he died unexpectedly on July 7, 1304 while in Umbria.
● Benedict XI was beatified in the year 1773. His feast is celebrated in Rome and throughout the Dominican Order on the 7th of July.
