"White Zombie" was inspired by the success of the 1929 non-fiction book, "The Magic Island," detailing the practice of voodoo in Haiti. Reportedly, the book was the general public's introduction to the very concept of "zombie." Nowadays, the word nearly always refers to reanimated corpses, but the definition then was broad enough to include living persons whose souls have been "banished" from their bodies, leaving them in a trance-like state. The movie incorporates both concepts.
