Alice Aycock recounts the origins of women of land art in vivid terms: “we took minimal art and made it into non-functional architectural sculpture in the landscape.” She and her colleagues “helped to invent making a particular type of art.” She said Mary Miss’ “work made a major statement in art history.” She said she has “always admired Mary’s work, [and] always though it was very, very substantial and that’s why I’m here” at the event “Mary Miss and Women of Land Art,” which was prompted by the Des Moines Art Center’s threatened demolition of “Greenwood Pond: Double Site,” a work commissioned for its permanent collection.
