In just eight days, a satellite-tagged Olive Ridley turtle has traveled over 1,000 km from the Gahirmatha coast to the shores of Sri Lanka. The turtle, monitored via satellite since September, has suddenly stopped sending signals. It is unclear whether the turtle has died, its transmitter has fallen off, or the battery has drained. The journey of this rare Olive Ridley—through Puri, Brahmapur, Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati, Chennai, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and into the deep waters near Sri Lanka—provides valuable insights into their migratory patterns. These turtles play a crucial role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance, yet much about their behavior and lifestyle remains a mystery. Previous tagging efforts by the Geological Survey of India in 2021 had identified other Olive Ridleys nesting along Maharashtra and Gahirmatha with metal tags for study.
