STORYLINE:
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte testified on Tuesday at the Public Prosecutor's Office in an investigation for the alleged crimes of genocide, aggravated homicide, and serious injuries during the anti-government protests that left more than 60 dead in three months.

The presidential office reported on its Twitter account that the president was at the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Before arriving for questioning her lawyer, Joseph Campos, told the press that Boluarte would not use "silence as a means of defense" but would answer the investigators' questions.

Prime Minister Alberto Otárola told local radio station RPP that the president's interest is "that things are clarified."

The president was summoned in January, February and March, but she has not testified until now.

Otárola was questioned in January and February in the same investigation.

The protests against the Boluarte government left 67 dead and more than 1,300 injured, according to the Ombudsman's Office.

Almost all the dead were civilians, and most of them were hit by firearms.

In Peru, genocide is punishable by a minimum of 20 years in prison.

Boluarte came to power on December 7 after her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, attempted to dissolve Parliament - which was seeking his impeachment - and was removed from office.

Castillo is serving an 18-month pre-trial detention in a prison in Lima for the alleged crime of rebellion.

Since then, protests have begun in the rural areas of the southern Andes, demanding the resignation of Boluarte and the members of Parliament.

The demonstrations spread all the way to Lima and subsided by mid-February.
