BMW 8-Series Farewell: Limited M850i Edition M Heritage in Classic E31 Colors
---
The BMW 8-Series has always been more than just a car—it’s been a statement of elegance, performance, and innovation. Since its reintroduction in 2018 as the G15 generation, the 8-Series has stood as BMW’s flagship grand tourer, blending luxury with sports car performance. But now, as this generation approaches the end of its journey, BMW has decided to give it a fitting send-off with a special model: the 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage.
Unveiled at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, this limited-edition model is more than just another trim package. It is a tribute to the legendary E31 8-Series from the 1990s, a car that still holds a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts. Only 500 units of the Edition M Heritage will be produced, making it one of the rarest and most collectible BMWs in recent years.
One of the standout features of this farewell edition is its nostalgic color palette, which directly harks back to the original E31 catalog. Buyers can choose from five heritage colors: Bright Red, Mauritius Blue Metallic, Cosmos Black Metallic, Oxford Green Metallic, and Daytona Violet Metallic. Each of these shades played an iconic role in the early days of the 8-Series, and now they return to honor the model’s legacy.
Complementing these classic colors is a carbon-fiber roof adorned with subtle tri-color M stripes, emphasizing BMW’s motorsport heritage. The exterior also features 20-inch alloy wheels finished in a bi-color Orbit Grey, adding a modern yet refined touch. Additionally, the M Sport Professional package is standard, equipping the car with darkened exterior accents, black brake calipers, and dark-tinted headlights—all of which enhance the car’s commanding presence.
Inside, the M Heritage edition continues its tribute to the past with a cabin drenched in Alcantara, covering everything from the dashboard to the door panels and headliner. The M Sport seats combine Black Full Merino leather with Alcantara inserts, featuring a diamond-shaped pattern and subtle, non-illuminated M badges on the headrests. Heritage-inspired details are everywhere: tri-color stitching, edition-specific badging on the cupholders and door sills, and a unique numbered plaque on the center console to mark each car’s exclusivity.
Technology and luxury remain at the forefront, as BMW has packed the M Heritage edition with nearly every option available in the catalog. Standard equipment includes the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, the Driving Assistance Professional Package, and premium matte carbon fiber trim. This ensures the car doesn’t just look like a heritage model, but also drives like a cutting-edge modern grand tourer.
Under the hood, the M850i Edition M Heritage doesn’t deviate from the tried-and-true performance formula. It retains BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine, producing 523 horsepower and 533 lb-ft of torque. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive, this powerhouse enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. While it’s not the full-blown M8, it still represents one of the most powerful and capable versions of the 8-Series lineup.
Of course, exclusivity and heritage come at a price. The 2026 M850i Edition M Heritage will start at $130,400, plus a $1,175 destination and handling fee. That makes it about $21,000 more expensive than the standard M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, but when you factor in the extensive standard equipment, bespoke touches, and its limited production, the premium feels justified.
Production is scheduled to begin in November 2025, with the first deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2026. Only select markets will receive this special edition, with the United States confirmed as one of them. For collectors and BMW loyalists, this represents not just a car, but a piece of history—a final salute to a model that has carried BMW’s grand touring legacy into the modern era.
As the curtain falls on the G15 generation, the M850i Edition M Heritage ensures the 8-Series bows out with style, performance, and a respectful nod to its roots.
