I Wish Harrison Butker Gave My Commencement Address

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker set the internet on fire this week with his commencement address at Benedictine College. Plenty of his comments were out of step with mainstream American progressive culture, but what really seemed to stir the pot was when he said, directed to the female graduates, “some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” This got me thinking about my own experience starting a family with my wife Lisa and the real cultural problems he pointed out in his speech. Whether you agree or disagree, it took real courage for Butker to stand up for his values without apology, and that’s something that most of us should practice more often.
