Scary Cable Car and Majestic Mountains - Cortina d'Ampezzo - Dolomites Italy

We arrived at our Hotel in Cortina in the late afternoon to a wonderful sun shower. It's a perfect location and our base for the next four nights.

It offered some relief from the searing heat we experienced in Bardolino - temperatures in the high 20's and low 30's instead of the high 30's. Even so the temperatures are unusual - even our 4 star hotel does not have Air-con - Review of the hotel to come soon.

Cortina d’Ampezzo is a tourist mecca and ski resort in northern Italy. The town is in the heart of the southern (Dolomitic) Alps in the Province of Belluno, in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. It hosted the 1956 Winter Olympic Games, postponed from 1944. It will host them again in 2026.

Cortina is situated in the centre of the Ampezzo valley, at the top of the Valle del Boite in the Dolomites, which encircle the town. The mountains in the area are described as "craggy" and "soaring", they resemble a massive coral reef ripped from the sea, it is truly a stunning place.

Among the surrounding mountains are Tofane to the west, Pomagagnon to the north, Cristallo to the northeast, Faloria and Sorapiss to the east, and Becco di Mezzodì, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri to the south. Monte Antelao (Nantelou in Ladin) is at 3264 m the highest mountain in the Ampezzo Dolomites and the second highest in the Dolomites. Cortina itself sits at an elevation of 1,224 m or around 4,000 ft.

We enjoyed walking around the charming town and doing a bit of shopping. You can pick up a quick lunch and nice souvineers at the Co-Op on the main street.

A highlight and only a short 10 min walk from our hotel was the cable car up to Mt Faloria - A scary ride indeed! The ride goes up about 1 km in height and is 2.6 km long. It costs €25 per person for the ride and the cars depart every 15 minutes. Mt Faloria is 2,123m in elevation. There are spectacular views from the top! We even had lunch in the refugio.
