Stories of Awakening: How to Enlightenment Episode 3
Episode 3: The Power of Seeing Clearly – The Hidden Story of Mahāmoggallāna (Part 3 of “The Eighty Great Disciples”)
Before he became the foremost in iddhi, the master of supernormal powers—Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was a man named Kolita, born into a Brahmin family near Rājagaha. His life was not one of ease, but of profound kammic reckoning. In this episode of Stories of Awakening, we trace the extraordinary arc of a being who once embodied Māra’s influence, reborn as Dussi, a malevolent spirit who tormented noble disciples, yet through the unfailing law of kamma and the rare fortune of encountering the Dhamma, rose to become one of the two pillars of the Saṅgha.
His awakening came swiftly after hearing the Dhamma from Venerable Assaji, just days after his friend Upatissa (later Sāriputta) attained stream-entry. But Mahāmoggallāna’s path was never merely intellectual. It was forged in the crucible of direct seeing, through meditative attainment, fearless confrontation with Māra, and unshakable loyalty to the Buddha’s dispensation.
We explore how his past actions shaped his present capacities, and limitations—including the tragic final days that reveal the inescapability of past kamma, even for an arahant. This is not a tale of magic or mysticism, but of cause and effect: kusala kamma yielding iddhi, akusala kamma ripening as vipāka. No soul transmigrates. No consciousness travels. Only the unfolding of conditions, guided by intention.
This story is drawn directly from the Pāli Canon, especially the Mahāpadāna Sutta, Cūḷavagga of the Vinaya, and the Theragāthā, and clarified by classical commentaries such as the Paramatthajotikā and Dhammapada Aṭṭhakathā. We present it without embellishment, without Western esoteric overlays, and without conflating yakkhas, asuras, or pretas with foreign demons like Satan.
