On September 10, 1998, China Eastern Airlines Flight MU 586, an MD-11 aircraft, experienced a landing gear malfunction shortly after taking off from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, bound for Beijing.

The crew returned to land safely about 30 minutes later, marking China's first major civil aviation emergency landing event, with all 120 passengers and 17 crew members unharmed.

Emergency responders were on-site to assist passengers, though nine individuals suffered minor injuries due to a faulty evacuation slide.

Investigators later revealed that the malfunction was caused by a defective pin in the landing gear.
