J-WAFS is pleased to announce the Judges Choice Award for “Research Originality” for our 2020 World Food Day Video Competition: Seaweed Harvesting submitted by Angela Loescher-Montal, Ous Abou Ras, and Arthur Boscolo of the MIT Department of Architecture!

About the Research:
This Seaweed Picking Barn project aims to improve seaweed production systems in Eastern Canada, acting as a regenerative food alternative to the environmentally harmful salmon aquaculture industry that is currently employed in the region. This project tackles both process and spatial design to re-imagine the seaweed production chain and the community practices associated with this process.

In honor of World Food Day, in 2020 J-WAFS launched a video competition for MIT undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and recent graduates to showcase their research in food and agriculture. Participants entered for a chance to win up to $1500 in awards. The winning selections were chosen by a panel of judges comprised of food systems experts across industry and academia.
