What do librarians, publishers, and artificial intelligence all have in common? Join us for a very human discussion on AI, exploring why and how this technology affects our negotiations for licensed content.

Understanding AI, including its impact on research and content protection, is critical for librarians and publishers to formulate their respective AI strategies. The foundations for successful negotiations include having a clear policy on AI use, clear priorities and deal breakers, and an understanding of the intersection of AI with existing points of friction, such as fair use.

We will explore why negotiations are increasingly complex, taking longer, and need considered contributions from a growing number of stakeholders. We will share recent strategies for how we each approached these negotiations and what worked, what we learned, and perhaps what we wish we had known at the start.

With the objective of finding a mutually agreeable path forward, we will also share terms and what they mean to each party, such as ‘computational,’ ‘generative vs non-generative AI,’ ‘ring-fenced,’ ‘using AI vs training AI.’

Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of stakeholder viewpoints, an improved negotiation vocabulary, and examples of current conversations to guide them in developing their strategy.
