This exquisite 1872 portrait of a young girl arrived at our studio concealed beneath layers of aged, yellowed varnish. The paint layer had oxidized, and extensive overpainting had altered the background. Fortunately, the sitter remained untouched, but the original setting had been completely transformed.
The overpainting—old, heavily oxidized, and painstaking to remove—obscured the portrait’s true composition. As we carefully lifted these layers, a remarkable transformation unfolded. The dark, stormy background gave way to an open sky, full of light and air, while previously unseen foliage reemerged, restoring the original balance of the composition. Removing the yellowed varnish also brought vibrant color back to the girl's face and dress—her pink necklace now glistens once again.
Now fully restored, this stunning portrait is set to be featured in a museum exhibition later in 2025, allowing its true beauty to be appreciated once more.
Stay tuned for more updates from the studio!
