Nashville Songwriters / Mia Morris vlog #19 - Nashville Artist, Songwriter, Multi-instrumentalist

I’m beginning to get some understanding of the job and business of Nashville songwriting. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve played or written with 14 songwriters that have had hundreds of their songs recorded and somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 number one hit songs. (I didn't count the 24 #1's that Rich Redmond has been a part of with Jason Aldean). It’s a bit strange to wrap your head around the fact that there are professional songwriters, especially if you’re like me and grew up on mostly rock bands that put out music that they wrote themselves but it’s a really big deal in Nashville. For a good example of what I’m talking about, even in rock music, check out a few of a very long list of songs that Desmond Child was a co-writer on: You Give Love A Bad Name, Bad Medicine, I Hate Myself For loving You, Living On A Prayer, Dude Looks Like A Lady.. it goes on and on.

I completely understand and appreciate the fact that the creative process of writing is where everything starts in music and I intend to be a part of it. Here are a couple of fun facts that I’ve learned about songwriters that aren’t really in the vlog. - Some of them sing really bad and can only play their instrument enough to make chords. - Some of them are incredible players and singers and for whatever reason, they didn’t make it as an artist but got to make songs for decades that the world knows. - Most of them look like everyone else and live very normal lives besides what they do for work during the day.

The other sections of this vlog show a Loud Jamz gig that I was a part of on bass and an afternoon gig down at Blake Shelton's club on Broadway. On the walk to the Broadway gig, I talk a little about the difference between what most tourists see and think of as the Nashville music scene and what I’m learning about the Music Row and songwriter music scene. They have less to do with each other than many people think. I’m happy that I get to be part of both.

I’m 15 years old and I want to be a professional musician when I grow up. I try to play lots of instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend a lot of my time writing and recording. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 5 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing music, keep loving it and keep getting better.
