A petrol container with 26 drums of petrol of capacity 500 litres each burst into flames at the Mokowe Jetty in Lamu West on Friday, killing a form three student and injured a 36-year-old man.
The fire broke out at around 12.30pm after a generator used to pump petrol from a lorry to the container released some sparks, causing an explosion.
Kenya Navy officers from the Manda Naval Base had to be called to put out the fire which took more than 6 hours before it was put down.
