Return to Freedom gives sanctuary to wild horses and mustangs removed from public land by BLM [Bureau of Land Management]. These horses would otherwise face a lingering fate in holding facilities - at tax payers expense - with the cruel outlook of being 'shipped' to slaughter houses in Canada or Mexico [ the US does not allow slaughtering of horses for meat production!]
The removal of horses from public land is due to pressures from cattle and sheep ranchers who want to graze their stock basically for free on public those lands.
Return to Freedom provides roaming to its horses on the hilly country in the coastal mountains near Solvang, California. Return to Freedom opens its doors to the public on specific weekends throughout the year for educational purposes and fundraising to support the 300+ horses in their care.
