For our 12th experiment, we learned how to make black gold. How much money do you usually spend on coffee? Probably too much. In this video, we explain how to grow and roast your own coffee.

You can buy green beans at most coffee shops that roast their own coffee, so go and get some. Soak the beans in water overnight, see which ones started to sprout and then plant those in soil. The chances for green beans to start growing are very small, okay? If you can get your hands on coffee berries, those work a lot better. BUT, it's possible that the green coffee beans work.

You can roast your beans cowboy-style, on the stovetop.
Make sure that the pan is hot enough, about 200 degrees and then: never.stop.stirring. We decided to stop roasting a few minutes after the "first crack". Still, for our taste the beans turned out too dark. But if you like Italian style espresso, you wouldn't mind.

What also works great, is a popcorn popper. It's pretty self-explanatory: Just pop the beans for around 3 minutes (depending on how hot your popcorn maker gets) and you're done.

You can also use a semi-professional roaster like the one we used. They obviously provide a more even roast than the other methods – but they also take a few minutes longer.

No matter which technique you use: Give the freshly roasted beans around 72h time to air out and release gas. They taste best about a week after roasting!
