the summer of 2003, the body of 36-year-old Saprina Payne was discovered in a field near Tront, Illinois. She was a black woman and was known for her drug use and prostitution. Saprina's body was found two days after she was last seen at home. Initially, an autopsy failed to determine the cause of death, leading detectives to think she may have overdosed. However, a detective had suspicions and those suspicions were confirmed when more bodies were found in Peoria and Tazewell counties the following year.
On February 5, 2004, the body of 36-year-old Barbara Williams was discovered in a ditch near Edwards, Illinois. She was found lying face down in the snow, with multiple bruises and fatal levels of cocaine in her blood. The police did not want to call this a murder or think of a serial killer.
By October 2004, three other black women, all addicted to crack cocaine and working as prostitutes, went missing: Shakonda Thomas, Shirley, and Tamara Walls. Laura Lawler, 36, a mother of eight, also disappeared in September 2004. On September 25, 2004, Linda Neil's body was discovered on King Street in the Tazewell district.
On October 15, 2004, Brenda Irving's body was found in a ditch near Farmington, with signs of strangulation and head trauma. Finally, in December 2004, Vicki Bulmer was arrested and revealed that she believed Larry Bright was a serial killer.
Larry Bright, born in Peoria, Illinois, confessed to killing several women after police found human bones and ashes in his garden. He was arrested in January 2005 and eventually confessed to killing several black women, all of whom were drug addicts and prostitutes.
Larry Bright pleaded guilty in May 2006 and was sentenced to seven life terms without parole, plus an additional 30 years for drug-induced murder. Larry is currently serving his sentence at Shawnee Correctional Center in Vienna, Illinois. The victims' families want the public to remember that the murdered women were not just drug addicts or prostitutes but also mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.
