Rajwada Fort, also known as Jadhav Fort is a one-of-a-kind historic monument situated in the industrial town of Pimpri-Chinchwad. The 17th century fort was built back in 1722 during Chhatrapati Shivaji's reign by Devji Patil Tapkir, a son of Dulbaji who was a Sardar in Chhatrapati Shivaji's army. More than 100 years later, Rajwada was taken over by Amarinh Jadhavrao and family in 1845 from the Tapirs. Ever since then this private family owned historic monument has been looked after by the Jadhavrao family.

What makes this place more significant is that the construction of Rajwada started seven years before the construction of Shaniwar Wada. Now that we have established the history of this almost 300 year old fort let's dive into the architectural beauty of this magnificent fort. Did we mention how beautiful and charming the fort is? The three story fort has a grand black basalt stone wall entrance with a huge wooden darwaza that makes way to the fort inside. The thickness of the walls is remarkable, the entire fort is encircled with the stone fortification wall like many other Maratha forts. There are huge palm trees on the outside which add some green charm to the stony architecture of the fort. There are jharoka windows on the top. The fort is not in its best shape on the inside; the doors open up to a huge garden that takes you further inside. There is a cave-like tunnel that takes you from one corner of the fort to the other. Cool, right? It also houses a beautiful Ganesh temple that is still in good condition.

Punekars, the good news is that the Jadhavrao family has decided to overhaul the fort in the most uncompromised manner. The family will proudly refurbish the fort, bring it to life from the current ruins and plan to turn it into a museum using the family funds. The renovations will be carried out in three phases. The fort will house all the weapons, valuables, art pieces and artefacts that has been passed down within the family for decades. It will remain a privately owned museum but will allow the public to visit and learn closely about the Maratha reign. The family aims to make it a major tourist attraction in Pimpri-Chinchwad and make it a significant landmark in Pune!
