On December 31, 1775, the Battle of Quebec marked a dramatic and ill-fated chapter in the American Revolutionary War. In the dead of winter, American forces led by General Richard Montgomery and Colonel Benedict Arnold launched a bold assault on the heavily fortified city of Quebec, hoping to rally Canadian support and bring the province into the revolution.

Montgomery approached from the south, while Arnold, after an arduous trek through the Maine wilderness, attacked from the north. The plan was to strike simultaneously under cover of a snowstorm. However, the British defenders, commanded by Governor Guy Carleton, were well-prepared and entrenched behind thick walls.

The attack quickly unraveled. Montgomery was killed early in the assault, and Arnold was severely wounded. The remaining American troops were thrown into disarray and ultimately forced to retreat. Over 400 Americans were captured.

The battle was a decisive British victory and a crushing blow to American hopes of expanding the rebellion into Canada.
