On April 8, the Town of Aurora uncovered a hidden relic box behind the cornerstone of the former George Street School — sealed there during the Cornerstone Laying Ceremony on September 14, 1957.

📦 This box wasn’t a typical time capsule, but rather a foundation deposit — an ancient tradition meant to mark and sanctify the beginning of a building.
Inside the box were carefully chosen items from key figures involved in the project, including:
📄 Minutes from a 1957 School Board meeting (submitted by Harold Clark, Board Secretary)
📰 A copy of the Aurora Banner (provided by Editor Dorothy Barker)
💰 Coins from 1957 (contributed by Trustee Betty Ward)
📋 A list of contributors and key project dates (by Architect William H. Robinson)
📜 The official Order of Ceremony from the cornerstone laying
Placed by Trustee C.V. Peterson and dedicated by Rev. J.C. MacFarlane, with remarks from Mayor James Murray, the relic box is a true reflection of the pride and community spirit that shaped Aurora in the 1950s.

The box and its contents are now safely stored at the Aurora Museum & Archives, where they’ll be preserved for future generations to explore. 💛
