Historically Anegundi has an important role in the history of the Vijaynagara empire, being the first capital of the empire. However, Anegundi was also ruled far earlier by emperor Ashoka. In various other periods Anegundi was ruled by a number of other dynasties, including the Bahamanis, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, as well as the Moghuls, Marathas and Tipu Sultan.

Currently, the Ramayana connection ensures that it's a well known religious destination among the locals. It's slowly building up as part of the Hampi tourism circuit which is bringing its inevitable side-effects
