Gill nets are designed to trap fish by their gills, but they don’t discriminate. Everything in their path becomes bycatch. In this case, a Cape fur seal became the unintended victim, entangled in a mess of thin, knotted monofilament. The lines are nearly invisible, razor-sharp under tension, and deadly fast. No other entanglement creates such quick and devastating injuries.
Our experienced team struggles to free him. Every strand has to be individually located, teased out, cut, and removed. It’s a tense, high-risk operation for both animal and rescuer.
Whoever is using gill nets in Namibian waters knows exactly what they’re doing. These nets are outlawed here. But someone, somewhere, has decided that the law doesn’t apply to them, and a seal nearly paid the price.
This is not an isolated incident. This is systemic abuse of the ocean, and it is killing animals that were never meant to be part of the catch.
