Transhumance is a fascinating tradition that reflects the deep bond between humans, animals, and the mountains.
In the past, herds would move from the lowlands to the alpine peaks to take advantage of the summer pastures, accompanied by expert herders on a long seasonal journey.

This practice also played a central role in the rural life of Val Sanagra. Today, it still survives, though in a more limited form: the alpine pastures still in use are Alpe Logone and Alpe Erba.

In the past, however, the transhumance extended all the way to Alpe Nesdale, passing through Spin, Alpe Erba, and Alpe Leveja, which served as intermediate stops along the way.

The journey was made entirely on foot, with the animals wearing distinctive cowbells to help the herders keep track of them.
The alpine pastures were rich in grazing land and equipped with shelters for milking and processing dairy products, hosting both people and livestock throughout the summer.

In September, the descent marked the end of the alpine season, closing a cycle that would renew itself year after year with the same natural rhythm.
