Eddie and Linda visited the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau. Pam felt it would be too disturbing so she chose not to go.

The gatehouse (Jourhaus) was the main entrance to the camp, with the infamous "Albeit Macht Frei" gate ("works sets you free"). It also served as the SS offices and interrogation rooms.

The barracks housing the prisoners were demolished at the end of the war but two have been reconstructed to show the conditions under which the inmates lived. Originally there were 30 barracks so the foundations of the remaining structures are outlined in stone.

The crematorium is on the outskirts of the camp. It's disturbing to see the ovens where prisoners' bodies were reduced to ash. Some condemned prisoners were hung from the rafters right in front of the burning ovens.

The gas chamber is in the same building. Dachau was never used for mass extermination as at Auschwitz and apparently it can't be confirmed whether or not this particular gas chamber was ever used, but clearly it was set up for that purpose. The disrobing room is just outside the door to the gas chamber which is labeled as a "shower room" (Brausebad). The room was equipped with fake shower heads in the ceiling to prevent victims from refusing to enter. I suspect the plumbing fixture in the side wall was related to the gas system but I don't know that for a fact.

While Jewish victims were housed in the barracks, the camp prison (aka the "bunker") contains cells and interrogation rooms which held mostly German political prisoners and religious leaders who bravely opposed the Nazi ideology. Many inmates were tortured here to exact confessions and information.

In the courtyard is a moving sculpture by artist and holocaust survivor Nandor Glid. Nearby is a monument declaring "Never again" in five languages.
