Riders at the Real Rider Cup received a special treat as decorated show-jumping Olympian and successful -- as in winning the Kentucky Derby (Barbaro), Belmont Stakes (Union Rags), and Breeders’ Cup (Round Pond) -- Thoroughbred racehorse trainer Michael Matz led the course walk.

Matz spoke to StreamHorse about the versatility of the Thoroughbred, his experience with the breed, and why events such as the Real Rider Cup are important for the betterment of equine athletes. “So many people get involved with Thoroughbreds and then they don’t really follow-up with what they’re doing after their racing career is over, and it’s sort of a shame, and this is why it’s very important for people to have that responsibility… these are things that benefit the horse in the long run,” he told us.
