Anaphylaxis is a severe, sudden allergic reaction that can be life-threatening if not treated immediately. It occurs when the immune system over-reacts to a normally harmless substance called allergen.
Common triggers of anaphylaxis include foods such as peanuts, seafood, milk and eggs. It can also be from an insect bite or medications like antibiotics such as Penicillin or anti-inflammatory pain medications.
The symptoms of anaphylaxis can develop within minutes of exposure. Starting with itching, hives, and a sense of impending doom. Later, you can have difficulty breathing with swelling of the throat and tongue causing blockage in the airway called angioedema. If left untreated, you might develop anaphylactic shock with sudden drop in blood pressure, rapid or weak pulse and fainting.
The most effective treatment for anaphylaxis is an urgent injection of epinephrine or adrenaline, which works quickly to reduce the allergic response, by increasing blood pressure, relaxing airway muscles, and reducing swelling.
Individuals at risk for anaphylaxis are often prescribed an epinephrine called EpiPen, which they should carry with them all the time.
In case of emergency, they should self-inject the EpiPen into the outer thigh muscle, even through clothing if necessary. After that, it's crucial to call an ambulance immediately for further treatment at the hospital. Sometimes, additional doses of epinephrine plus IV fluids and other medications, such as antihistamine and cortisone injections, may be needed to control the symptoms.
