3 Harmonic Minor Licks - Gypsy Jazz Guitar Secrets Lesson

I got a question from YouTube subscriber Bill McCahey who asked me for some 'Harmonic Minor' licks that he could use in his gypsy jazz solos.

Incase you didn't know, there are two sorts of Minor scale 'Harmonic' and 'Melodic' and in a nutshell the 'Harmonic' minor scale gives you that middle eastern, sudo flamenco vibe which sounds great in Gypsy Jazz. :-)

I've got three cool licks to show you in this video lesson that will help give you that cool 'Harmonic Minor' sound that Bill is asking about.

Lick 1.
This one sounds great over Am and E7. Starts on the beat with an A and after hitting the B descends down the A minor harmonic scale highlighting the 'Spanish' sound of G#-F-E. I like to slide up to this one to give the lick nice momentum.

Lick 2.
Now we start on the minor third C on the 8th fret of the top E string. This one has the same rhythmic phrasing as Lick 1 and also sticks to the A harmonic scale to give you a cool sound over Am OR E7. Don't worry about the ornamentation at first, just learn it straight...this will serve you in the long run.

Lick 3.
Here's a cool Minor Harmonic sound starting with a section of an A minor arpeggio. This starts on the E and goes up to the top E (12th fret on top E string) before coming down to C via the D to give another hip sound.

Here's how to get the most out of these three licks:

1. Remember, you can play them over both Am and and E7 chords.
2. Practice them up and octave and down an octave so you have the same lick in different registers.
3. Learn them IN TIME slowly. This will ensure you're rhythmically in control weather you're playing the licks over a ballad, medium swing or ripping up tempo tune.

Once you have these three licks under your fingers make sure you play them at every opportunity you can to absorb them in to your playing.

Try them out in the different tunes you know. Practice playing them over and over again to make them part of your improvising vocabulary.

Have fun!
Robin
