In this video we'll explore some of the key early signs of undiagnosed liver problems in adults. As a doctor I often see patients with abnormal liver function tests who end up having fatty liver disease - now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). While in the early stages, this can have no symptoms or very non-specific symptoms. It is still one of the main causes of liver cirrhosis and we'll discuss which signs and symptoms to look out for.

Early Signs and Symptoms:

1) Tired all the time
2) Fatigued
3) Vomiting or having nausea
4) Headaches
5) Tenderness or discomfort on the R side of your abdomen - under your ribs
6) Loss of appetite/weight loss / or if you notice your muscles are wasting away
7) You may get skin signs like small spidery-looking veins called spider naevi
8) Red palms - called palmar erythema

Sign and Symptoms of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) / Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD):

1) High levels of Bilirubin
This is why you get the classic yellow look to the skin in later stages of liver disease
But also you can get a darker colour to the urine and pale or clay-like poos
itch or irritating feeling all over.

2) too much fluid in the body
You might notice you are getting swollen ankles or feet
Fluid out of your blood vessels in the abdomen

3) Some people may notice that they have more frequent nose bleeds or bleeding from their gums
suddenly vomiting up blood or have dark tarry black stools - this could be a sign of internal bleeding
This needs an urgent hospital visit because it can put your life at risk

4) As the liver fails - we see the build up of toxins which make their way in to our brain and crossing the blood brain barrier - a protective membrane that regulates what goes in and out of the brain

5) Confusion and disorientation - having trouble to think clearly, feeling muddled
Memory issues may become apparent - you may forget things and have short term memory loss -
tremors or ‘flaps’ You can actually check for right now is called a Liver flap or an Astrix

6) In men not being able to get ride of the extra estrogen can lead to breast enlargeent and reduction in the size of the testicles. In women it may lead to irregular periods or a lack of periods.

7) Non specific symptoms - Headaches, Fast Heart rate, abdominal pains and bloating. You may get muscle cramps or weakness . You may get muscle cramps or weakness.
