I had to drive young Déjà Vu to the Shoalhaven to minicreche with Janine, because Déjà Vu started to fly and had grown out of her carer's apartment.
Janine had a bunch of babies of different ages, ones about to fly, so she was running a minicreche for carers who couldn't take their babies past their initial flights because of safety reason and lack of space.
On my way to the Shoalhaven, I picked up little Wild Oats, who had gotten himself stranded on a balcony and was unable to fly off.
Janine added him to the mix and cared for him while his grazes healed.
He's now a big boy and hanging with the adults awaiting suitable weather and local flowering/food supplies, so he can be released with the adults also in care, into the immediate vicinity.

Here's footage of him arriving into care, including me putting the dressings on his grazes. Bat wing bones have very little tissue between the skin and the bone, so any grazes to their knuckles are quite difficult to keep moist enough to avoid the bone drying out while the grazes are healing.
We use a dressing called Duoderm which keeps things moist and allows the blood cells which bathe the wound in healing "goop" (all the goodies in the fluids which ooze into and around wounds during healing), to do their work.

I had to mute most of the footage where I was putting the dressings on; we had 2 parallel conversations going on at the same time, and one was mostly personal and irrelevant to the bat care.

Both Déjà Vu and Wild Oates are doing well in care, awaiting release - both will go out through the creche system.
When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. At this stage they'd be separating from this batty mums and be becoming more independent in the colony. In creche, at this age, they learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.
