Who BUILT these Mysterious Giant's Churches? This is a short history documentary on who built these mysterious buildings or ancient ruins around 4000 years ago!

The mysterious giants churches (jätinkirkko, jatulinkirkko) are squared, tens of meters long stone wall structures that has only been built in the Ostrobothnia region of Finland. People have believed that they are castles made by giants, ancient castles or astronomical buildings like the Stonehenge which door openings would have something to do with the phenomena of the starry sky.

Whatever the reason was that these giants churches were built, one thing is for sure; that is That the builders were seal hunters. Because traces of Large scale seal oil (blubber) cooking has been found in the areas surrounding the giants churches. Seal hunters have warmed up rocks on open fire and on the hot rocks the seal fat has been made liquid and then collected into baskets. When the rocks have been warmed up too many times they have cracked and then been thrown into waste piles.

Around 40 giants churches have been found and the most famous and largest giants church is Kastellis Giant Church located in Raahe. It measures about 60 by 35 meters. The walls are 7 meters wide and survive to a height of 2 meters. There are six gateways. It is now located in the middle of the forest, but when it was built about 4000 years ago it was located on a rocky shoreline.

Only a few stone tools have been found inside this giants church but walking here feels magical and you can almost imagine people working here with their quartz tools collecting seal fat that was valuable and used in leather treatment and illumination. There was a huge demand for seal fat in the South and The production in this area must have been enormous.
