A red-breasted sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber ruber) feeding in the Pacific Northwest. The red-breasted sapsucker drills rows of holes in trees and subsequently returns to the trees to feed upon the sap that flows from these punctures. Sapsuckers' tongues are adapted with stiff hairs for collecting the sap during this feeding method. They also eat bits of cambium and tree tissue, as well as the insects that are attracted to, and trapped in, the sap.

The red-breasted sapsucker is native to the west coast of North America, from Alaska down to northern California. There are two subspecies: Sphyrapicus ruber ruber in the northern part of their range and Sphyrapicus ruber daggetti in the south.
