But first, let’s set the stage of what has happened to the Apostle Paul and why he is writing this letter.  Paul writes this letter from a prison in Rome where he is chained to the foot of a Praetorian guard, in order words, a Green Beret/Navy Seal/Seal Team 6 member of the Roman army.  These men were responsible for guarding the emperor. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem for causing a ruckus and at that time he appealed his defense to Cesar which he had the right to do being a Roman Citizen.  So off his is sent to Roman to appeal his case before the lunatic Nero, who, to put it mildly, is no friend of the Christians.  So the situation looks bleak and the Philippian saints, who loved Paul dearly, are worried. So they take up an offering and send it to Paul.  Having received this act of love from the church which he founded, he writes to them to both thank them and let them know how’sbe he holding up under the circumstances. So let’s read the context starting in verse 10.
