Ten years ago, nearly a million people arrived in Germany, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, as part of the largest wave of migration since the Second World War. Then chancellor Angela Merkel opened the country's borders wide and new arrivals were greeted warmly by Germans. A decade on, many bitterly complain that services, from childcare to housing, have been stretched to breaking point. Others point to the many migrant success stories, the joys of a more cosmopolitan country, and newcomers plugging gaps in the ageing labour market. The tensions have divided the country and helped make the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) the second largest party in parliament.
