Muriel, 73, worked from the age of 15, raising two children while holding down multiple jobs. But despite a lifetime of work, she now struggles to afford basic necessities. She eats one meal a day, relies on her husband’s night shifts to keep a roof over their heads, and even pulled out her own teeth because she couldn’t afford the £400 dentist bill.

The UK State pension is a regular monthly payment people can claim once they’ve reached state pension age. As of 2025/26, state pensioners will receive £230 a week. For pensioners who haven’t contributed national insurance for more than 30 years will receive a lower payment of £176 a week.
