Welcome to Live Lunch! This time, we were joined by Chris Lambert from Datasense Ltd. The team gathered to discuss data and cyber security…
Here are the snippets:
Datasense provide guidance on securing your systems and data and assistance in keeping your IT systems running smoothly – which apparently does extend beyond switching it off and on again. That said, Chris has experienced occasions when failing to switch devices on at the wall have caused work to grind to a halt!
Despite the repeated guidance we’ve received over the past several years about password strength, it’s remarkable how many people use the same, simple password for multiple sites and platforms. Password management tools can help to not only select a strong password, but also store them to save you having to remember it. LastPass is one example which has a Chrome plugin and an app, however the free version’s functionality is becoming more limited. Chris also recommended BitWarden, which is another free option, offering cross-compatibility for various platforms and devices.
Multi-factor authentication is another useful weapon in the fight for cyber-security. This is a security feature which requires an additional means of authentication, for example as a code texted to your phone number, before allowing you to login to a site or service. It’s important to remember that, although nothing offers 100% protection, the more security features you implement, the higher the level of protection.
Historically, IOS has been viewed as more secure than Windows, however that is no longer necessarily the case. There is no inbuilt security system within the Mac OS, however Windows machines have Windows Defender as standard. There are a few security measures that Chris recommends, whatever operating system you use. Firstly, install security software on all your devices. At a minimum this should be antivirus software, but ideally with an additional firewall as well. It is also worth exploring the option of having your business devices on their own wifi network, separate from the home wifi where possible. When out and about, it’s also important to connect via a hotspot or VPN rather than public wifi networks in order to increase security.
With the increasing use of smart devices in our homes, it’s also important for us to remember that these devices we connect to our wifi which can potentially be a gateway into our secured network. It’s essential to be conscious of where we’re buying these types of devices from in order to maintain network security.
When commenting or sharing content on social media, there are seemingly innocent posts which encourage people share personal information on social media One example is the ‘Find out your elf-name’ type posts and fake news with sensational headlines. Commenting on this type of content can seem harmless, but the information that it encourages people to share along with the use of hashtags for tracking, can leave us vulnerable to exposure.
A video shared a few years ago by Action Fraud serves as a warning of how easy it can be to obtain personal information. You can see the full video here • Видео .
With frequent news of data breaches, https://haveibeenpwned.com/ is a site which can help you identify whether your email has been exposed as part of a data hack. The first thing to do if you find that your data has been accessed, is to reset your email password so that you are able to regain some control before resetting all your other passwords.
It’s essential that we are mindful, both as consumers and as businesses, of GDPR and privacy whenever data is gathered. Having the right privacy policies in place is essential, however there are a huge number of organisations who believe a ‘one size fits all’ approach and use downloaded privacy policy templates, rather than one based on their specific requirements.
