She thought it was a wedding.
It was a trick.

Three village boys, jealous and rejected, had forged the note. When she arrived in her white dress, they were waiting. They mocked her. Cornered her. Sukie fought back. She threw stones. They threw them too. One fatally struck her head. She died that night.

Now they say she haunts these tunnels in white.

These caves weren’t just old chalk quarries. In the 1750s, Sir Francis Dashwood had them excavated as a grand underground folly - half public works project, half private playground.

He filled them with winding passages, mock temples, and candlelit chambers inspired by ancient mystery cults. Here, the Hellfire Club toasted Venus, staged rituals, and laughed behind masks.
