In Texas, 45% of children in foster care are now placed with relatives through a process known as kinship adoption. This legal procedure allows family members to adopt children within their own families, providing a stable and familiar environment for the child. Ashley Walker Burns recently completed this process, adopting her two grandchildren and marrying her new husband, all within a year. "It definitely was a no brainer to me," Burns said. "They were going to be with me, with family, and I wouldn't have them go anywhere else."

Beth Boudreaux, a child protective investigator, highlighted the benefits of kinship adoption, noting that it reduces a child's sense of abandonment and increases the likelihood of permanency. "Personally, I have been honored to have my home as a kinship home," Boudreaux said. "My experience is that you need to provide love, guidance, patience, and support, and a child can thrive in your home."

Families involved in kinship adoption work with specialists to ensure successful placements and may qualify for resources such as tuition waivers, daycare assistance, and monthly payments. For more information, families can visit the Department of Family and Protective Services website.
